I am going to Guangzhou in July. I believe I will have 3 in-country flights between Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Beijing.

Will I save money if I just buy my ticket to Beijing and then buy the ticket to Guangzhou once I arrive?

Making travel arrangements this year appears to be more difficult for some reason than last year........ I just I have a lazy travel agent. :(

There are discounts for earlier bookings and depending on availability. See the plane travel section in TCG for a guide to this. If your agent can access the discounts, great, if not you book them here.

In my case buying my ticket from the US to Hong Kong was reasonable but once I was in HK and wanted to get a flight to Jiujiang was $400USD.I went into Shenzhen and booked a flight from a Travel Agent for $100 USD so I saved $300.

Yes, Griz, you can book flight tickets in TCG and we offer good discount now. Click the Plane icon on the top of the page and you can find the "search" function. Input your date, airlines, time, etc, you can get the flight info and ticket price.
Cheers,

most definitely - getting domestic flights within China - is alot more cheaper through domestic travel agents - as often have seen ho ridiculous online foreign travel agency charge for domestic flights.

buy the tickets when you feel like moving, no need for pre-arrangements.

There are good train in China, of course~!
The number of trains start with Z, T, K are mostly good. Don't buy L trains. They are too slow.
I don't think train journey is not safe. But you surely have to keep an eye on your luggage.
