SANYACHINA ,Actually it depends on what kind of situation you are sitting in,when in conversation with somebody."You Chinese...",in workplace,my colleague from Germany lost his temper because of certain trouble of him.It was absolutely impolite.Surely you may not be able to fully understand since you are not the listener.

It is similarly like that my head (a Chinese lady in her 30s) talked to me directly "As a worker,it always means that you should be the SCAPE GOAT."oh,my God.It is the most ridiculous statement I've ever known since I was born.

"Sanyachina, enough ranting, alright?"

Ranting? You can hear it? Strange...Do you have some eidetism?

"We're not here to bash China or Chinese people for not measuring up to anybody's aribtrary set of standards."

Man, I was banned from some Western forums BECAUSE I LOVE CHINA AND I EVERYTIME PROTECT THE CHINESE IMAGE ABROAD. SO I AM THE LAST ONE WHO WILL DASH CHINA/CHINESE PEOPLE. But I will not close my eyes in front of the Truth. If WE have some WRONGS we have to be honest and to admit them. Otherwise it will be a bad fanatism.

"I'm well aware that many foreigners dislike the term "laowai", but so what?"

So what? Nothing what. Just sometimes you can receive some dirty words from them and after that - fight, police, court and why not jail or mortal punishment?...So what? Just go on, call them what they don't like, but after that do not be surprised if the are aggressive. Some of these guys do not care you are a person and you have some motivation. In their countries to answer rude, to beat, to kill is just a kind of nowadays behaviour. I just would like to protect you.

"The term is essentially neutral, even if it is often abused."

If they DO NOT LIKE IT, they DON'T CARE if it is neutral, possitive, negative and...some of these guys EVEN DON'T KNOW what is "essentially".
THEY EVEN FIGHT IN THEIR PARLIAMENTS!!!

"Used appropriately in a proper context with proper respect then no harm is done."

Why you have to use a CHINESE word in English context? Just call him/her/them "foreigner" and it will be OK. As I can see you have no problem with using English.

"And although the terms "laowai" and "foreigner" are usually used (in China, at least) to refer to white people, there is nothing in those terms that restricts them to being used to refer to white people, nor is there anything in them that implies that all non-Chinese are the same."

Hehe, EVEN for some of the Xinjiang minorities, some Han-chinese are trying to use such a terminology! Of course it will make people to feel unconfortable! Yes, we are not the same, but we are Easterners and we are part of one and the same society, so just it is OK, do not use separative terminology.

"Yes, some people dislike being reminded that they are, in fact, foreigners"

They dislike to be called "laowai", because for some of them it sounds not just bad, but they EVEN do not know what is this exactly means!

"but that is a simple fact. If they don't like it they're just going to have to learn to deal with it."

Depends. For example in some Western societies the close freinds call each other "gey". If you are there, may be you will be not happy someone to say "hello" to you in thier way: "Hi, gey! Where R U going?", and then, probably, you will feel upset if you have to "learn to deal with it".

And once again - a lot of "laowai"-s, they don't like to learn how to deal with it. They ALREADY have some dealing "methods" like this:

but I am pretty sure you will not like them.*

____

* The brief intro about the story:

In Europe a deputy is walking down the street with his puppy. He met a young guy who parked his car in a wrong place. The deputy told him : "It is not right. Move your car." And then the young man with his fists broke his nose and head. You can see the blood in the street and you can see the beaten deputy over here:

That is all why I am trying to explain you some simple truths. It will be pity because of one word to get bad results.

Be happy! :)

"SANYACHINA ,Actually it depends on what kind of situation you are sitting in,when in conversation with somebody."You Chinese...",in workplace,my colleague from Germany lost his temper because of certain trouble of him."

And he decided that all Chinese are bad, right? I think I can understand it. And IT IS A GOOD EXAMPLE HOW EASY IS TO MAKE SOME FOREIGNER ANGRY. That is what I am trying to explain over here.

"It was absolutely impolite."

YES, I SEE!

"Surely you may not be able to fully understand since you are not the listener."

OH, BELIEVE ME - I DO!

"It is similarly like that my head (a Chinese lady in her 30s) talked to me directly "As a worker,it always means that you should be the SCAPE GOAT."oh,my God.It is the most ridiculous statement I've ever known since I was born."

She was the boss/menager there or what? This I can't get correctly.

Well,SANYACHINA,The beautiful Mrs Y is the secretary of German boss, namely "director" of China branch.Poor boss,I do sympathize with him sometimes since he knows nothing about his business and then relied trust on an inexperienced lady to develop business in China.Maybe he is too rich to worry about any lost of money.I think.

Even though I was born in the year of sheep,it doesn't necessarily mean that I need to be the SCAPE GOAT all the time.It seems that her job or future career is more IMPORTANT than mine.

There is a saying that "He makes himself a sheep will be eaten by wolf".Do you think so??I did experience and then realized it now.

Anyway,it is useless to cry over spilt milk.
