I have tried going to Minsheng Bank near Nanjing Rd in Shanghai to open a bank account with Internet Banking but they dont allow me to open an account because I am a foreigner.

They said I must have a real home address in China...

Hey, different banks have different requirements. Some banks require not only your home address but also your resident permit. However, some other banks just require your passport and valid visa. Perhaps, you may try to open an account in Bank of China.

GUESTTAISHA this is the latest. foreigners are no longer allowed to open bank accounts without proof of address, and employment. even if you already have a bank account, they will go back and verify your employment status. if you cant prove you are employed in china, or prove your address, then they will freeze your account. chinese proof of address doesnt mean walking in with a utility bill. they will come to your crib to verify that you live there. it's the strictest it's ever been. china went from being one of the easiest to one of the hardest. other hurdles you will have to cross are cell phone verification. the cell ph # has to be in your name in order for you to get a bank account. this means that only those with a permanent chinese ph # can have a bank account
