The boss approved my vacation today and the travel agent is booking the tickets now. That means it's time to start making my itinerary for the rest of the trip.

I arrive in Hong Kong and leave from Beijing with almost 3 weeks to wander around. To plan properly, I need to compare time versus cost of air versus train. Is there a train schedule available online that allows me to see how long each leg of a train trip is?

This site's train schedule is good, but I must know which stations go where. For instance, Guangzhou->Chendu returns one result...but there are two stations in Guangzhou and three in Chendu. How do I know I am looking at the best train for the trip?

I remember a train schedule that was posted here before, but have not been able to find it again.

I'm looking for the same information. Looks like we have the same itinerary: into Hong Kong out of Beijing. Tell me if you have any other good information for planning, I need some help!

On the top right of this page you will find two Icons

Plane for planes
Search for everything else click on search and when the new window opens look down the menu on the left for trains. this has all the regular trains funning throughout the country. You may need to change trains and this search does not always cater so it is handy to have amap with the routes so you can see the likely rail junctions

I use these all the time but during special holidays there are often more trainsscheduled but this gives good guide to times and cost etc.
happy planning

I am certain that the shortcomings I've found in the current resources has to do with my limited grasp of geographic locations in China, relative distances between them and so forth...but a sophisticated train scheduler would be very helpful right now.

So does anyone have a link to a railway map?

We used to have a railway map link in here, I think, but not now. Try using Google search and pick the 'images' option - I got quite a few to choose from.

I found quite a few maps, but as detailed as they were, they didn't do the trick just yet. ...and my next trick will be trying to figure out how much each train ride is going to cost.....

...of course, the final trick will be to realize that I am not Superman and cannot leap tall pagodas in a single bound...that I need to sleep...and that sleeping on the train doesn't give a guy my age good sleep.

Just for fun....my current itinary goes:

Hong Kong->Shenzhen->Guangzhou
Guangzhou->Nanning->Kunming
Nanning->Kunming
Kunming->Guiyang
Guiyang->Changsha
Changsha->Chengdu
Chengdu->Beijing

The reality:

500 hours in China
147 hours of sleep (7 hrs/day)
60 hours on trains (5 major segments around 10hrs)
4 hour flight Chendu-Beijing including security

These rough numbers leave me just 289 hours/12 days to enjoy China.

...but I would really like to squeeze in Xian too....;)

Stay tuned as I try to bring this into something resembling a realistic, wanderer's trip.

*hehehehe* should be entertaining....
