![]() | Over 5000 years ago, Chinese people already got the family names. It's hard to say how many family names are there in China, but most of experts believe that it is about 5,000 now. Some are very common, such as 赵(Zhao 4), 王(Wang 2), 张(Zhang 1), 李(Li 3), etc. Some are combined with two characters, such as 诸葛(Zhu 1 Ge 3), 东方(Dong 1 Fang 1), 长孙(Zhang 3 Sun 1), 司马(Si 1 Ma 3), 司徒(Si 1 Tu 2), etc. There are also some very interesting family names. |

![]() | i dont agree with you~MAY001 , i am a chinese, but i never saw a man's family name like this "米(Mi 3), 油(You 2), 盐(Yan 2), 酱(Jian 4), 醋(Cu 4), 茶(Cha 2), which means Wood, Rice, Oil, Salt, Soy, Vinegar and Tea. Some people are named 狼(Lang 2, Wolf), 鸡(Ji 1, Rooster), 猴(Hou 2, Monkey), 狗(Gou 3, Dog), 蛇(She 2, Snake), 妻(Qi 1, Wife), 妾(Qie 4, Concubine), 骂(Ma 4, Abuse or Curse), 邪(Xie 2, Evil or Irregular), 龟(Gui 1, Tortoise) and even 嫖(Piao 2, Go whoring)!!.. unless these are used for the minorities. it is statistic that the rate of the population that the first 100 most commonly useing family name are more than 87% . and there are 19 family names wich are more than the rate of 1% . they are 李 li3、王wang2、张zhang1、刘liu2、陈chen2、杨yang2、赵zhao4、黄huang2、周zhou1、吴wu2、徐xu2、孙sun1、胡hu2、朱zhu1、高gao1、林lin2、何he2、郭guo1和马ma3 by the way, my family name is 邱 qiu 1 ^_^ 占全国人口1%以上的姓氏有19个,分别为李、王、张、刘、陈、杨、赵、黄、周、吴、徐、孙、胡、朱、高、林、何、郭和马。 |

![]() | Haha, CHARLIECHIU, all the family names I mentioned here are rare to see. So that may be the reason you haven't seen them before. For example, 龟(Gui 1, Tortoise) are a surname of Taiwan people. Plus, even these family names are minorities', they are also Chinese. :) |

![]() | Yes,so minorities choose their Han family name from the pronuciation.Like our manchurian,for example,Gua Er Jia=瓜尔佳,they change it to Guan=关 in chinese. |
