I read this article:
http://www.china.org.cn/english/culture/206133.htm
Which mentioned this website (but with a slightly different address, and the site seems to be Chinese only):
http://www.easyyou.com/spec/silu
So it seems that the government is setting up a new "management mechanism" to promote tourism along the Silk Road, uniting the efforts of the provinces and autonomous regions of Henan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia and Xinjiang. This could bring some very interesting results, and I for one would be interested in checking it out (I've been meaning to make a pilgrimage to Shandan, Gansu, for a long time, but that's a whole different story). Right now I just don't have the spare cash, and I'm pretty sure my wife would disagree, but still.......

Hmmm.... Not sure if "Travel Q&A" is the right place for this. Perhaps it should be under "China Observer" or "Chitter-Chatter".

Yes Chris,
I have moved your thread under China Observer. : )
Anyway, Silk Road is one of the most precious historical and cultural heritage of China. Developing tourism along it will of course let more people know and love it!
Interesting long-distance running along Silk Road, isn't it? : )

Thanks Siva, it suddenly occured to me when I finished writing that I was putting it in the wrong place.

I think most people know about the Silk Road, but for most it's some long-distant historical thing. Seeing the real places would be awesome. As for long-distance running along the Silk Road, I think I'll stick to more regular forms of transport.

Ths 'Silk Road' route might be the 'dream' trip of every traveller enthusiastic about china, It is our ultimate destinations in china to ‘finish’ (having made the provinces of Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia only) It requires time, money of course, a lot of researches (the travel literature are scattered) and careful planning (we tended to stray away to visit other interesting places in those provinces…). Its also all the more meaningful when you know well in advance about the histories of those places and people along the route. Being there is an awesome experience indeed and great for photography too
