Can anyone give me any advice/hints on travelling from Guangzhou to Xian. We are staying in Shenzhen. And how far is it between Guangzhou and Xian?

When will you travel from Guangzhou to Xi'an? If it's not during the golden weeks, I would suggest you to take flight, which will cost you about 500 to 800 Yuan(with discount).

The distance from Guangzhou to Xian should be more than two thousand kms, nearly a 30-hour train journey.

GUESTCAROL Hi, we will be travelling from Guangzhou to Xian and then onto Beijing. Should we plan on flying between these cities? How long is it to travel by train from Xian to Beijing?

yes the Octopus card will get u to Lo Wu station - there's plenty of fashion wear shopping in shenzhen - just walk around the city - but main thing is be careful of yr wallet n cell phone.

i think the train from Hongkong connecting China (Kowloon-Canton Railway "KCR") runs through Guangzhou, Baijing and Shanghai only

Guangzhou -- Xi'an by flight if you can afford it, it's too long on a train.
Xi'an -- Beijing 11 hours overnight on the fastest Z train.
