Hi, I have a mobile phone with a China Mobile Shen Zhou Xing rechargable pre-paid SIM card. Whats the best way to call the USA from my mobile phone? Can I just dial direct and if so, does anyone know what that would cost? I have heard of IP cards. I'm in Kunming and I've asked a few people and they don't know what an IP card is. Are there IP cards in Kunming? Thanks for any help.

Any shop authorized by the China Telecom sells the IP cards with different price. Some for China long-distance dialing, other for international long-distance. Ask to the shop where you buy the Sheng Zhou Xing SIM card. I think it should be easy to find. Otherwise, go to the phoning bar (called "Hua Ba" in Chinese). which is another method.

The cheapest way to make a long-distance phone call is by using an IP (internet phone) card. With an IP card you can make international calls for RMB 4.8 per minute, less than half the rate of an IDD call. These can be picked up at most hotels, Internet cafes and newsstands. Instructions are both in English and Chinese.

Also, these cards go for way less than the face value, typically 40-50RMB for a card with 100RMB value.

It's really cheap! But sometimes it is not easy to be put through.
