How to Build Chinese Universities into the First Class Univiersities in the World?

Competitiveness Ranking of Chinese Universities 2007 released by the Research Center of China Science and Education has aroused the public attention. According to the ranking, there is no one Chinese university which is ranked in the top 100 universities in the world. The result is disappointing. Many universities in China aim at building the first class university in the world. However, it seems that they have not found the appropriate way. They build new campus and improve the infrastructure facilities. More and more college students are enrolled in the universities.The teahcers are busy in publishing their books and papers. But the quality of teaching is not good. A good university should have a great number of renowned professors and excellent students. the scale of the university is not important. In your opinion, what kind of university is the first class university? What should we do to fulfill our dream of building the first class university in the world?

I believe that China has a few elite uni's, but the quality must spread to all uni's. A major issue is a lack of qualified academic staff. Then a new approach to education which is about thinking and challenging ideas is needed. It would also help if China get rid of the profit motive that lies behind many of the colleges - 'recruit as many as possible, fail none, we want the revenue' does not deliver the best academic results.
