On March 19th, the spokesman of Ministry of Foreign Affairs said at the press conference that China will think carefully whether they will build the aircraft carrier. At the same he emphasized that China would not start another round arms race. The main purpose for strengthening the national defence power is to maintian the security of the territory and PRC's interests. The international community holds different views toward this issue. Japan, Australia and Korea thought China woud because China will have the power to control the sea if she owns the aircraft carrier. More interesting is that US said that they once shot the picture of Chinese aircraft carrier. How do you think about it? Should China build its own aircraft carrier?

Yes, I think so. I read before that China already built own helicopter carriers and buyed some Soviet aircraft carriers. If China already built own aircraft-carrier it is OK.
China is a strong, rich and powerful country, so this tools are part of the equipment of this kind of countries. Good luck!

But why? "Because China is a strong, rich, powerful country" is pretty weak reasoning.

the main purpose is to guard its territory. China is capable of building the aircraft carrier at present. However, some people think that China will dominate South Asian ocean area. It is a threat to other countries.

There's the rub: To defend its territory China does not need aircraft carriers. Nor does the US, really, although in America's case it does have some rather more far-flung possessions. To protect its interests, China does need to look carefully at the Indian Ocean, and for that reason China may decide to build aircraft carriers. I don't think that'd be the wisest move, personally, but events in Pakistan and Myanmar may develop in a way that makes aircraft carriers more necessary.

Wouldn't the money be better spent on the poor people or hospitals? In this sense I wonder if China is really rich enough yet.

I agree, Paul, there are higher priorities here.

Aircraft carriers are about imposing military control, via air superiority, over areas far beyond a country's own land borders. It is a tool of global 'empire' and I should not think this is a priority for China.

Oh, no. It is very good reason. But just because of its entimematic form, you do not get it. In this case I have to explain more. Well,...
1. Rich. If the country is poor even can produce some tanks and guns. How it will produce aicraft carriers? SO - this is a base to produce/buy them.
2. Strong. China is not a pity country like some small countries which like/must to obey to NATO/USA, etc and of course have to follow the "Big boss". No. China is an INDEPENDANT country. And because of this China CAN CHOOSE TO HAVE THIS IMPORTANT ELEMENT OF THE NOWADAYS ARMIES!
3. Powerful. If China is not powerful, the foreign countries will make it the same pity as China in the 19th century. You can see what happend with some countries as Iraq or Yugoslavia, right? SO IN ORDER TO KEEP THIS POWERFUL CHINA HAVE TO OWN THIS IMPORTANT ELEMENT OF THE NOWADAYS ARMIES - the aircraft carriers.

As you can see - pretty strong reasoning.

Why not? Do you know how far from the mainland are situated some of the Chinese islands and islets?

"Nor does the US, really, although in America's case it does have some rather more far-flung possessions."

China is the same, man! Please check how far from the mainland are situated the (南沙群島) Spartly Islands.
