I am thinking of flying from Kathmandu to Lhasa to Chendhu in April, I would like to travel by road to Kunming and Dali is this possible? How long would it take? Is it easy to get budget type accom.

Plenty of Kunming -- Dali buses, I think it's about 4-5 hours for the journey. Overnight trains are also available and a better use of time and money.
