Are you from the village called "New Street"? I am looking for someone who can help me trace the families of 2 men from that village - buried in New Zealand. One man was age 40 when he passed away in 1918. The other is buried 26 miles away, but I have no idea when he passed away. He was still alive in 1913 though. Both have the surname Chan, and they are from Sun Gai Village.

The villages are along the railway line between Hong Kong and Kwangchow - The Pearl River Delta. Yes it is almost 100 years ago - but there are 2 lonely graves in my old home town area... Surely their descendants would want to know where they are? Maybe people will know it by Xinjie - near Xintang.

Good luck with your search. It would be interesting to discover what the men were doing and why they left home in the first place.

They would have come to Gum Sarn (Gold Mountain) in the gold rush years, and not having made money, would have travelled to Taranaki to work with kinsmen in the market gardens or fruitshops. The Chinese were sojourners, and they would have planned to go back home once they had made their money. But the 40 year old must have died prematurely, and his family would never have known where he was. i would really like to let their village know of his final resting place. I can only assume their kinsmen buried both of them.
