| 生, one of the male roles in Peking Opera. 须生(or 老生), which means the elder roles in the opera. 红生, the 须生 who are painted in red. Such as the roles of Guan Yu(God of War), Zhao Kuangyin, etc. 小生 is the younger male roles. 武生 is the one who will fight in the opera. This pic is a 小生. Most of 小生 in Peking Opera are gentle and literary.  |

| 旦, is the female roles in Peking Opera. 青衣 is good at singing and most of them are young wives and mothers. 花旦, also called 花衫, is featured by the colorful costumes. Most of them are queen, princess, royal concubines, rich women, etc. 武旦 or 刀马旦 is good at fighting. 老旦, the elderly women. This pic is 青衣  |

| 净, also called 花脸, which means that the actors are always in facial painting. Now, all the 净 roles are male. 铜锤花脸 or 黑头花脸 are mostly focusing on singing. 架子花脸 are focusing on fighting. The most famous 黑头花脸 is Lord Bao whose face is painted by black color.  |

| 丑 is much more like a comedian or buffoon of the opera. There are 文丑 and 武丑. 文丑 means that the role is literacy man. 武丑 is the one who are good at fighting. There are also many other minor roles called 丑. |
