I'll arrive at the airport in Hong Kong - 7:50pm and have to clear customs.

Is it possible to travel from Hong Kong to Guangzhou that evening; or would that be too difficult? If everything goes smoothly, would my Guangzhou arrival be about midnight/00:00???

I want to be able to sleep-in after the long air flight without continuing to travel the next morning.

Hello Griz,
You did not mention, ways of travell Air , Bus or train or sea. Beacuse all this travel you may avail from HK to GZ.
Any way I guess, you will travel by Air, then it's to easy to travel. No need to custom clearence in HK. You may avail transit to GZ and can reach GZ with in one hour.
Thanks
Sharif

...but can I make it by train or bus??? I did not even consider air travel between HK and Guangzhou. I will consider it.

Is there any reason for me to sleep in HK and then leave early in the morning? I think I am better off in Guangzhou.

Griz,
I guess you are not thinking about Shenzhen. You may visit Shenzhen. Very interesting. You will watch how Shenzhen being a famous city in the earth.
It's border to Hong Kong. From Hong Kong Airport easy to go Shenzhen by Bus, Train or Ship. A journey of one hour. May take rest and sleep in Shenzhen. Then you start for Gaungzhou by Bus or train. A journey of 2 hours.
Every where you take care about burgaining. Here every thing are very cheap.
I am leaving Shenzhen today for Kunming.

Hmmmmm.... I guess going to Shenzhen gets me into China the same day, but it leaves me traveling the next day rather than resting. I'll read a bit about Shenzhen in my tour books and here...

I'd really like to cover the distance to my first real stop while I am in great distance travel mode.

that seems not hte best time of the day to arrive... as you'll be probably missing the last flight and last direct train to Guangzhou which are around 7.30pm (but option of suburban train KCR to interchange in Shenzhen to check out schedule...)

the coach option seems to be feasible but needs to check the exact schedule of the date. There are coaches from the airport (down terminal 2) run by CTS and other companies to Guangzhou and other nearby mainland cities. CTS => http://www.mangocity.com.hk/english/bus_m/zhonglv-jch.htm

HI Griz,
You can easily make to Guangzhou that night if you arrive at HK airport. When you arrive at HKG airport just go to the bus counter for Guangzhou.Just ask the first person you see it is right in front of you when you exit the baggage area. From HKG airport take the bus that drops you off at the China Hotel....very centrally located. From there you can get a cab or even take the metro if you are traveling light. From HKG airport to Gunagzhou will take you about 2 hours and you can easily make it out of HKG that same night as the border is open till about midnight.if the bus accepts you then it means they will get you to Gunagzhou that same evening.it is a very serrious and dpependable operation.I am a Canadian that has an office in NIngbo China and I live there about 4 months of the year. What I have just described to you is what I have advised some of my best customers.it works and is totaly painless and is cheap.
If you need any more help I am here
