Hey there,

I'm going to Beijing, Shanghai, and HK in July, I have a few questions:

1) How long should I plan to spend in Beijing? I want to do the Great Wall among other interesting things, few historic places amusement park, zoo (if they have).

2) Is it difficult to get the cheapest class train tickets to Shanghai (as well as Shanghai-HK)? By that I mean should I buy them as soon as I arrive in Beijing?

3) Will they stamp my passport when I leave for HK via the train? I am getting a single entry Chinese Visa, what I mean is, I am arriving in China by plane but leaving by train, will that be a problem?

4) How long should I plan to stay in HK?

Thanks very much in advance,

Charles

It all depends on your schedule. Generally, 3 to 4 days is a good idea. Yes, there is a zoo and a safari park.

2) Is it difficult to get the cheapest class train tickets to Shanghai (as well as Shanghai-HK)? By that I mean should I buy them as soon as I arrive in Beijing?
When will you come to Beijing?? If not come to BJ on May, July, August, Oct, it will be not so hard. But it's better to buy them in advance.

3) Will they stamp my passport when I leave for HK via the train? I am getting a single entry Chinese Visa, what I mean is, I am arriving in China by plane but leaving by train, will that be a problem?
No problem, I think.

4) How long should I plan to stay in HK?
Do u like city life and shopping? If so, stay there as many days as you can. Actually, HK is a good destination. But you may read more to decide whether you like it or not.

Thanks for you help SIVA =)

I am coming to China in July so that sounds good train-wise. I am excited to take the cable car in HK up the mountain, it looks like the views are spectacular.

In Beijing area:

The Summer Palace and the Great Wall are well worth the time in Beijing.

I suggest not taking an all day tour with many stops at other sites for the Great Wall trip...rather visit the Great Wall and then return to Beijing to see the acrobatic show...and the magic show (which I did not get to see :( --- but I am a magician so perhaps that is not of interest).

I also enjoyed the bicycle rickshaw ride through the Hutong. I'd suggest visiting the old neighborhoods on foot. It has a nice flavor and is probably wonderful in the early evening.

I had a problem getting cheapest class tickets in Shanghai... I have heard that there is an old rule forbidding foreigners travelling in the hard seats/sleepers. Maybe it was a language issue or there weren't any 'hards' left, or the agent gets a bigger fee, I don't know. If you find yrself needing to buy on the spot you can usually find a local to help and get the tickets u want.
