We did Skype and chat at the same time. I typed in English what I was going to say and use Wenlin to create characters for the words I did not think she would recognize. It was a very successful conversation. ...it also helped to hear her say the Chinese word...that I had used Wenlin to write for her. I am certain there are other dictionaries that can be useful this way, but I was very happy with the Skype/Wenlin combo this evening. Perhaps this will be useful for others here. :)

My apologies, I should have explained Wenlin. Wenlin is a language learning computer dictionary. It can translate English or Pinyin into Chinese characters; you can write characters and it recognizes your written character; and it can speak the Chinese word.

It is like Pleco which many people run on their Palm Pilots.

Both seem to be excellent tools. I have both and have no preference although I use Wenlin more because it is on my computer and allows me to cut 'n paste Chinese characters into email and this web forum.
