JIMMYB uploaded a number of pics a while ago showing something similar to these, and correctly credited it to super-sonic effect, but these pictures make it even planer to see the nature of the shock wave-front that has triggered the vapour clouds:

These were sent me by a colleague from work, the web-site http://www.airliners.net has many examples, with explanations of the circumstances for the pictures shown. There are also some real-time video clips on YouTube, which show that these events some-times only last for a brief moment.
