Tour group or not

I will be traveling in July w/ a friend, we're thinking of Guilin, Shaolin Si, Xi'an, and area around Chendu. Is it wiser to join tours for these, or is it fairly easy to do on your own, in terms of figuring out where and how to go since we don't speak chinese. Thanks, everyone in advance!!!

Maybe Xi'an and Guilin are not dificult for you to make the tour by yourselves, since you could find english-speaking people easily. While, in Luoyang and Chengdu, i'm afraid you will have some
language obstacle. At this time, you could seek help from the local travel agent. Here, i would like to offer an itinerary for your reference Xi'an/Luoyang/Chengdu/Guilin. Hope it helps.
