I read that sometimes Chinese men have distorted views of western women from the media and what Americans consider ordinary everyday friendliness might be taken as more from a woman. Is there an appropriate way for a western woman traveling (sometimes) alone to behave to avoid unwanted attention?

If you travel to China you will encounter a different culture, very different. It took me a few days to adjust to the attention I received and I am a man. Not everything you read is true and what one person experiences wont be the same for the next. Chinese people are the friendliest I have ever met and so you will be ok wherever you go, just remember if you go to rural areas you will attract a lot of attention as you might be the only non Chinese they have seen. Dont assume that lots of men around you means that they are hitting on you.
But at the same time consider security and try not to travel alone too much.

Rural areas have fewer people and fewer foreigners. One of my friends ( a British woman) visited a small village a few days ago. When she was walking on the road one day, a man came up. He was very stunned seeing her and stared at her without blinking. When they were nearer, my friends said 'nihao', he was so surprised - almost to faint. :)))

Oh crap! Why'd I upload a photo? For some reason I didn't think it would put my profile picture in otherwise. Now it won't let me delete it. Oh well, live and learn, I guess.

You are an attractive young woman; healthy young men will be interested - that's just the way it is!

You look clean cut. If you wear very little make-up and conservative clothing while you are in China you won't have to carry a baseball bat to beat off the men. ;-)

Traveling alone in a strange country can be dangerous for a man or a woman - even in a country as safe as China is. The only crime we were informed of when I sailed to China in 1978 was rape; at that time there was virtually no other crime in China.

Rape is a problem all over the world - not just in China.

My years as a sailor taught me a 5 travel rules good for both men and women:

#1 - You are responsible for your own safety.
#2 - Stay out of bars and clubs if you are alone.
#3 - Do not drink to drunkeness (or take intoxicating drugs).
#4 - Do not walk through parks or unlighted roads at night.
#5 - Enjoy the friends you meet while traveling, but do not trust them.

If you keep your eyes open and use common sense, you will have a wonderful time.
