Do you use China's post office often? Actually, I seldom use it now. I use E-mail and e-card more often. However, when delivering sth., such as a package of Xian speciality to my cousin in aother city, I have to use it.

In the post office, you can say我想寄信(Wo 3 Xiang 3 Ji 4 Xin 4), which means I want to deliver a mail. Then the postman or postwoman will ask you 外地还是本地(Wai 4 Di 4 Hai 2 Shi 4 Ben 3 Di 4), which means Local or other cities. The postage will be rised when the letter weights heavier.

If you want to deliver a package, you should say 我要寄包裹(Wo 3 Yao 4 Ji 4 Bao 1 Guo 3). Never pack it in advance cos the postman will have a look on what you wanna delivering. The postman will use their box to pack it to you and of course you have to pay for the packing service. You may also prepare a suitable box and just let the postman to pack it after checking. But not every box you prepared is OK!!
