Going to China in September ,around 3 weeks (not sure yet..)
Tell me if this is too ambitious- Beijing 4 days, train to Pingyao (2 days) .Train to Xian (2 days) .Plane to Guilin (2 days) Bus to Yangshuo ( stay 4 days to see Li River )
Plane to Shanghai (3 days) Day trips to Suzhou and Hangzhou.Flight to Beijing.
Is this possible or should we change something? We don't know any Chinese. But we have done a lot of traveling.
Thanks all!

I leave in a week for 3 weeks in central China. My schedule is much less ambitious than yours. My travel style is that of a meandering wanderer. I hate tours - I would much rather interact with the people (...and am coming armed with my street magic to entertain). After my trip (that includes up to 7 destinations), I'll give you my thoughts.

...but your travel style probably dictates whether 8 destinations is too much.

Yes, Piglet, it seems like way too much for such a short time. Suzhou and Hangzhou have enough attractions and charm to entertain any traveler for a week, maybe two. Also, they are 7-8 hour train trips from Shanghai, so planning a day there will require most of your time sitting in a train coming and going
(this is not my idea of a good vacation).
Also, although I have never been to Xi'an, I have been told their is much to see and do there. I doubt you can truly experience Xi'an living and culture in just two days. Why not just visit one or two cities instead of six or seven?

I am doing 3 week trip in september that will included Guangzhou,Guilin,Kunming,Dali, lijiang and Zhongdian. It is long distance and will alllow few days in each place plus a couple of overnight trains. I personally dont mind a hectic schedule and realise that when I finish the trip I will need a holiday to get over the holiday. If this will be your only trip to China then you will want to see as much as possible but if you plan to return then limit your cities, savour each one and know that you will be back.
