I'll be traveling to china with a group (family) of about 9 people. We have about 16 days available to tour China (we leave on the 16th of August). Now obviously this is not nearly enough time to do any comprehensive traveling of china, but I would like to see some of the major sites. I'm a serious amature photographer, specically interested in landscape photography. Can you guys recommend some nice places to see? Here is a (very rough) plan: We arrive in Hong Kong. From there we have 16 days to see whatever. I have no idea about the travel between cities or how long that takes. Perhaps some of you "experts" could suggest a circuit that starts with (and ends) Hong Kong? More than anything, we want the emphasis to be on culture and landscapes/scenery, so I'm open to swapping out cities to accomplish that. HK(2) Shanghai(3): Tour city for two days. Then tour Hangzhou for a day. Bejing(2): Forbidden palace. Greatwall. Guangzou(2): Nothing much here interests me, but my father just married a lady from here, so I suppose we will have to spend a few days here to meet the new fam... chengdu(?): I would like to try the spicy food here, However, I'm more interested in the beautiful scenery in this province such as Jiuzhaigou Valley. How far is this scenic place from the city? It would be nice to spend a few days touring the gorgeous landscapes reputed to be in this province. Is that doable? Guilin/yangshou (2-3): Caves, river. I can't wait to set up my camera along this river! Yangtze River(?) Krumming(?) Not sure how long it will take to get here from the other parts of china. I would really love to see the Tiger Leaping Gorge, the Stone Forest, Lijiang, 'Shangri-La', and the rest of the stunning sights in this province, but I fear there won't be enough time. I have left out some of the major toursit places like Xian because there's really nothing to see except for some statues.

Hi,Jjasc, I think you can start from Hongkong to Guilin and Yangshuo(at least two days,3 or 4 days are better,so amazing places),then you can visit Kuming,Dali and Lijiang(at least 4 days,I think),then to Chengdu and Jiuzhaigou. You can take more beautiful pics. From Chengdu to Xi'an(2days),then to Beijing(at least 3days),to Shanghai and Guangzhou, then HongKong. Good luck!

Hi JJASC, Just envy you. You can have such a wonderful trip in China. About Jiuzhaigou Valley, I just found some information on the Internet. Hope it helps. It is not very far from Chengdu City. You can take a bus in Xin Nanmen Bus Station in Chengdu to go there. The bus will be delivered at 08:00 and the ticket is RMB94 per person. The whole trip will take you about 10 hours. And the scenery along the bus ride is beautiful, so that you'd better take a seat in the right side. Jiuzhaigou Valley is a highlight for all the people traveling in China. You shouldn't miss it. Hope you have a good trip.

Thanks for the advice guys. Now the catch is that in the group of people, I have an aunt and uncle who are not used to "roughing it out." I don't think they will be comforatable with hole-in-the-ground toliets. My 10 month old nephew is also coming along. Are there decent accomodations availible in some of the more senic places? ( Jiuzhaigou Valley, Stone Forest, Gulin, etc)

I don't think you can have such an ambitious plan since there are elders and kids. Which city will be your exit port? It may help to arrange your tour.

| 1) hi, your time is too tight for so much cities, so I suggest you have to give up some citites then you can have enough time for the scenery but not spend much time on transportation. 2) Further question is that you have big family, so you need to book hotel / plan your transportation immediately to avoid trouble during trip. 3) Xi'an is old attractive city with long history, so we think you can arrange time to visit it. 4) As for Tiger Leaping Gorge, the Stone Forest, Lijiang, 'Shangri-La', and the rest of the stunning sights in this province, it need long time transportation(normally 3~6 hours between cities) between the cities. It took me 12 days for these places also the time is still tight even I arrange so long time during my past weeks backpackers travel in Yunnan province.
