Does anyone have experiences of doing this route? Or, less specifically, going from Qinghai province to the Southern Silk Route in Xinjiang?

My friend and I are exploring the possibilities of doing this via public transport, in early July. Are looking for information about transport (where/how/how much/how long etc) in particular, as well as safety and any other pertinent issues.

Thanks in advance. :)

dear Ellyse
Took this route coming from Lhasa (by train)last August (2007), you need to get an "Aliens' Travel Permit" from the police station in Golmud (Germu) before you can buy your bus ticket (near the railway station) for the sleeper bus that takes you to Huatugou (via Da Qaidam), then an other bus to mining (cement) town Mangnai Zhen from which you can get a 4 wheel drive car that takes you over the Altur Shan mountain range, arriving at Ruoqiang (Charklik) after passing Miram on the new (315) road.
good luck
