| I have just seen a documentary following a Cantonese speaking tour guide/ boat owner in Hong Kong. He can speak very few words in English or Putonghua and is losing business because he cant talk to potential customers. Because he works alone it is difficult for him to find time to take lessons as all his time is put into his 1 man business. Do you think this is a problem that will happen more and more now that Putonghua is taught increasingly? Will people who only speak Cantonese be at a disadvantage? |

| Cantonese is a dialect, which is spoken by people in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. If these Cantonese-speakers can speak only their dialect, it is difficult for them to communicate with those who can't speak Cantonse. So, it is better for them to learn Mandarin. Well, the Chinese authortity has required all teachers to speak Madarin in class. |
