I know it as: lěng qì jī or "lang hei kei" in Cantonese (ie HK).

But in Zhuhai and some other parts, it's called "hoong tiu" or something like that in Cantonese, not sure of the Mandarin equivalent.

Which is the proper way to call it?

So an air-conditioner is called a kong tiao ji or just kong tiao?

What about len qi ji?

Which is the "proper" term to use or are both acceptable?

Some air-cons in north China can be used as heater in winter, i think "Kong tiao" is acceptable in most occasions, or simply say: leng qi.

In north of china, people call it "kong tiao",in south of china, especially in canton, local people like to call it "leng qi ji"."leng qi ji"means a machine that makes cold air.
so i think "kong tiao"is a wider used name in china,it has the meaning of"air condition controller".

My Lao Po in Guangzhou simply says to me...A/C !!

"So hot today in Guangzhou, must sleep with A/C on"

Also, it is interesting that unlike northern China, most homes in Guangzhou and other parts of the south, do not have heating, only the air conditioner A/C.
