Hello, My question is how far will one Yuan go? Is something that would cost say $50 American dollars sold for close to the equivilent (i.e. 375) Yuan, or is it like 50 Yuan? Thank you.

It really depends. Local merchandise can be considerably cheaper. Import stuff can be outrageous. I remember when I first visited a friend of mine that lived there nearly a decade ago and I brough a botle of jack daniels. It was as if I had brought the man liquid gold. The mom told me that at that time JD was selling for something like 20x what it goes for in the states. keep in mind that you can eat for about 20 yuan.

Ok, thank you very much. How much would something like jewlery cost? I have gotten requests from my family to bring jewlery back, and I dont want to be unprepared. Thanks

I would like the answer on that one as I'm buying my future wife's wedding ring there, having said that I'm sure she will do the haggling to get the best deal.

Again, the answer is, it depends. Pearls, gold are cheap there, but you need to be able to bargain. If you are looking for really, really nice jewelery though I would head to Thailand. Granted, the stuff in China is amazing. If you are looking for something specific, be sure you spend a day to look and then a day shopping. Odds are that A, B, and C all have it and all are going to charge you differently, especially if you're a foriegner. Keep in mind though that if you begin to bargain then if you agree on a price you're more or less bound to it. For this reason, look around. Lots. To give you an idea, my mom bought a beautiful set of pearl earrings, with matching ring set in white gold for 200 kwai. I bet we still paid too much.

In general, the prices in south China are about 1/5th of prices in Australia or 1/6 in the north of China. As prices in the UK are about 2.5 times higher than Aus, they are say 15 times cheaper here! I am told the Uk is dearer than most of Europe these days so maybe prices here are just 1/10 of Europe. No idea of US prices these days.
