The Oscar Best Motion Picture "Crash" stirs a sensation in US. This movie is praised for its realistic theme. It touches upon a sensitive but long-lasting topic: racial discrimination. Under the director-Haggis' microscope, racial prejudice is like a cancerous tumor, once triggered, it spreads very quickly and damages other cells of body.In the movie, the tumors of racial discrimination show up in people from all walks of life. The racist cop Jack Ryan victimizes the black couple, Cameron and Christine, by exercising his power and humiliates Christine with an invasive body search, while her husband is forced to stand by powerless. Jean Cabot, a racist wife of a local attorney, has a strong prejudice against minorities. Her prejudice originates from the carjack incident by the two young black men. After the incident, she becomes paranoid and suspious of other races, and suspects the Mexican locksmith Daniel will give their new keys to his friend to break into her house. Her antagonism against minorities make her lose her temper without any justified reasons. Everyone in the movie seems to act in a racist manner toward each other. These characters turn a trivial disagreement into antagonism or hatred, which in turn messed up their own lives. After watching this movie for the first time, I was deeply touched into tears. This movie is reflective. Actually, in our daily lives, we all have a certain prejudice against others, and very often, we are prone to turn a trivial disagreement or dispute into antagonism. No one is infallibe, and prejudice is everywhere. Usually, we claim that we don't have any prejudice against others. Is it true? In fact, we have, sometimes we are just unwilling to identify it.

This is an ancient problem which everyone knows but most deny. I have heard of some people saying "we are all human, not white, green or black.." Hahaa, how nice it sounds to the ears ! Unfortunately such discrimination of all sorts happens everyday and everywhere that to most it has become an acceptable practice. Even Chinese discriminate against themselves in favour of foreigners. Personally I doubt one can eradicate this problem in the short term or ever.

GRYOKAN, I couldn't agree with you any more on the point that " Even Chinese discriminate against themselves in favour of foreigners." In the job market, those who have overseas experience are particularly welcomed, though some one may have gone abroad for a short travel. If you have visited USA, you will be flattered. In some Chinese people's eyes, US seems to be a paradise.

I have seen this movie twice. It is a very moving story. The title is a pun. Crash symbolized the car accidents in the movie. Its undertone is that cultural crash is the root of daily disputes.

Great movie. I think they should translate it into every language. I wish they have a Chinese version so my parents wont call my friends "white ghosts". Leopold, Does this thread stem from Nicholas thread about favorite movies? Danny

DESTRUCKDOZ Haven't you noticed that Leopold's thread was posted on Jul 18, 2007? "I wish they have a Chinese version so my parents wont call my friends "white ghosts" Why did your parents call your friends 'white ghosts"? Is it because your friends have a very white (exactly pale) complexion? I can not understand. You are American. So your parents are white Americans too, right? Your parents and your friends have the same skin color.

Actually, I forgot to look at the posting date, my apologies. I am actually Chinese American. In Cantonese, a lot of people still refer to white people as "White Ghosts" or "Clear Devil", whichever way you use that last Chinese character. Danny

Unfortunately, racism is very much alive. Many racists know that they are racists. However, many people make comments that are in fact racist but they don't even know it. *sigh*
