Hi, We will be visiting Hangzhou for 2 days in August then on to Suzhou for 1 night. What is the best way to travel between the cities? Is it easy to use public transport? Or a taxi? Do you think we will need a guide? Thanks

KERIC The bus is easy - my wife and I had very little chinese language knowledge last year when we made this trip, but our hotel arranged the bus ticket, and helped write directions to the taxi driver to take us to the bus terminus in Hangzhou. The bus terminus has a wide arc of exits leading out radially from the ticket area, where you qeue for the buses shortly before boarding. Familiarise yourself with the characters for Suzhou, and point to your ticket got from the hotel, and I believe you will find the staff will be very helpful! Good Luck - we found the gardens in Suzhou much more of a challenge to locate than getting to Suzhou from Hangzhou... I strongly recommend an evening visit to the Master of the Nets for the musical and drama entertainment (but take a taxi there - don't try to find it on foot!)

Yes, bus is quite a good way for you to visit. If you take a train, the train will firstly go to shanghai and then go to Suzhou, no direct one!

we suggest: 1) Ask your hotel to buy the direct bus ticket from Hangzhou to Suzhou. 2) As for the guide, everybody has different taste, if you are a backpackers, you may read some books to learn and then have a look. If you wanna to save time for reading, you can turn to a guide for help. Enjoy!! Yours sincecely, Susan Zheng ( China Tour Guide)

Many thanks for that. Do you have any idea how much it would cost to get a taxi from the airport to hotel in Hangzhou. Or is public transport easy enough? We arrive about 6.30 pm.

For Hangzhou -- Suzhou either bus or overnight ferry, definitely not train. Take the airport shuttle bus (15 RMB/each) to town and then taxi to your final destination. It departs once every 30 mins (or less, if bus is full) and will stop at Jiangnan Dadao (Jiangnan Avenue), Hangzhou main train station, Marco Polo Hotel and Wulinmen (CAAC office).
