Beijing, a historical and cultural city of 3000 years, is facing an embarrassing situation. The priceless heritage is disappearing. Hutong ,once was seen as the symbol of Beijing, is a typical architecture of Beijing. Hutong has witnessed the vicissitudes of Beijing, but now it is driven toward extinction. During the modernization of Beijing, these ancient structures are being abandoned by Beijingers. Many have been mercilessly demolished and replaced by skyscrapers. What a pity! Someday, we can see only the high buidings made concrete and steel in Beijing.

If you were to live in a hutong and now the government/developers are offering you plenty of money to move out. The compensation money is more than enough for you to find an alternative accomodation in BJ + some surpluses. It is a rare chance that not many have. Will you handover your hutong and will you lament over this ?

I undestand the thought of those that see the hutong disapear as it is a part of China that I feel most represents the past. In many other part of the world the housing was torn down to be replaced by towers that could not in the end reflect the community. But who am I to talk as I have not been given the chance to cash in. Dodger.

Some ancient structures are the heritage that our forefathers left. Heritage once was damaged, it can never be repaired.
