| Gryokan, Is the English version of 童子鸡 acceptable? I find another version----boiled tender chicken with soy sauce. Which one is more suitable? Once I heard that the foreigners can not understand such translations for these dishes. Another example is "驴打滚"-----rolling donkey. It is a famous snack in Beijing. How can we translate into English? |

| Hahaha !! I really don't know whether the translation is correct - but it is literally. Don't you agree ? Boiled tender chicken is not necessarily a chicken that has not had sex ! But 童子鸡 is supposed to be a virgin chicken. 驴打滚 = Rolling Arses ? Hohoho !! Chinese love to give fanciful names to their food and it is almost impossible to give a appropriate translation in other languages, I think. Your govt is facing this problem trying to provide appropriate English translation of names of food, notices, etc, etc. Any other ideas ? NB - Unrelated to food - but how about this notice I encountered : "Slippery, fall carefully" ? |

| Yes Chinese government is now managing to give authoritative english names for these chinese food. It is expected to be fininshed before 2008 Olympics. |

| "Slippery, fall carefully" ? I guess that it tries to tell you " Be careful. The floor or stairs are slippery." Such translations can be found almost everywhere in cities. Just look at this picture.  |
