Statistics shows that the number of people committing suicides exceeds the mortality caused by traffic accidents in Shenzhen.

The main cause for the increasing suicide is depression and anxiety. A survey says the Shenzheners shoulder much stress and pressure. The skyrocketting housing price is the main culprit for people's anxiety. According to the State Statistics Bureau, to buy a house of 80 sq meters, an average Shezzhen person have to struggle for 55 years.

Another factors like the lacking the recognition and sense of belonging to a group also contribute to the increasing suicide. Shenzhen was once the most dynamic and rapid growing city. Its ecocnomy is still roaring, while the spiritual life is declining.

Sorry to hear this. It seems as though everywhere I have moved to has become a "boom" town. I think underneath all the hoopla of "getting rich" lays a deeper foundation of a sense of purpose. Is the endgame goal a larger house, a larger family, a larger car...how about a Hummer? A perfect example is the now-popular mobile phone. Not only have scientific studies discovered that the electronic radiation created by this 'technological marvel' can be deadly....I just wish the slogan "connecting people" would continue into some sort of meaningful purpose.

For that matter, I am about to discard my mobile phone, since I have a telephone in my apartment.

So the foundation of purpose, 'a sense of value', in a senseless and chaotic society can lead a person from anxiety into depression. I think about riding my bicycle through a smog-infested city and think I would rather not. What sort of connection is there? Well, at least riding my bicycle is a better alternative to standing up on a bus and tolerating the driver's constant pumping on the brakes, but let's get down to it.....were we put on this earth to assist some techno-industrial Mammoth-Machine have It's way into our pocketbooks and our brains? I DON"T THINK SO.

So, I will end with a quote from a fellow environmentalist, "Live wild or die"!

...a very sad story indeed. The sort of pressure you describe is fairly common among ambitious people in western countries. Western people have had many years to grow accustomed to the pressure, but many still take their lives or find other extreme outlets for the pressure.

I am certain these sorts of pressures have helped to make bungee jumping off of bridges so popular.

In the future, the situation will become worse and worse because the house price is keeping on rising and rising. People who feel depressed and anxious should find a way to abreact or they should ask help from the doctors. Commiting suicide is very stupid because it can not solve the problem.

Well, life seems to be always full of contradictions. Material affluence and spiritual emptiness seems to be coexisting. The so-called sense of value drive lots of people crazy about so-called "self-fulfillment". Anyway, no matter how tiresome this world might be, life still needs to go on, life itself is priceless.
