![]() | I've seen some movie clips about robbery in Shenzhen, on a busy street and under broad daylight, 2 men, 1 snatched a lady's hadbag while the lady victim stuggled to cling onto her handbag, the other robber start showering punches onto the victim. What actually bothers me is that there was so many passerby but none actually stop to help, they just walked on as though nothing happened. Why is it so? Beats me. What kind of society is this? |

![]() | It is common everywhere. People are frightened by these robbers. If they help the victim, they themselves would be hurt next time...... Sad to explain this, but it is ture. |

![]() | THis is a rare situation although bag snatching is one of the more common crimes...we are told. Chinese cities are much safer than most western cities, but you must still take care. People do not interfere in most countries... for various reasons (including courts penalising them for asault). In China ou willfind people do not get involved in what is not their immediate business... Iam the only person, it seems who takes action against queue jumpers at railway stations...very vcommon...and then people applaud me... but they never do anything themselves. The culture here still reflects the not so distant past where the whole system was based on just do your job, no more no less and then you avoid trouble. |

![]() | If everybody here adopts this kind of attitude then god bless them, I wouldn't just stand and watch. No wonder the chinese has got an ancient saying " Everybody sweeps snows only at their front door" in Chinese “各扫门前雪”Very disappointing isn't it Paul? Can't people at least call the police or just do something/ anything? Why do they just walked on as though nothing happened? |

![]() | Shenzhen is incredibly crowded and almost all residents are recent arrivals who do not have the same sense of community that older towns and cities have. However, most have brought their small-town friendliness with them. I would say that the average resident is younger in years than most big cities and so they are very active. Traffic is horrible and buses and taxis can sit still in traffic making you late for whatever. There are many shops and they are very competitive so you can find bargains. I have a niece who is a nurse and a sister-in-law who is the director of a school for deaf children who live in Shenzhen and they like it. It is still growing and more people are moving in. It has been a different experience for me each of the three time I visited (May,2000,:Feb.2004 and Aug.2007) Follow the advice that applies to visiting any big city and you should be OK. Example- don't flash cash, wear sensible clothes and shoes, but remember- always carry napkins or kleenex! Even the nicest places may surprise you by not having any toilet paper! Good Luck! |

![]() | In Shenzhen and Guangzhou, you need to be careful when you take your bags since it is not good control for safety to some extent. On the other way, you will find Beijing and Shanghai are better area compared with Shenzhen / GZ. Just take care yourself during your trip anyway. Enjoy! ![]() | I don't think the writer of the last post knows much about the rest of the world. I can assure you that China is much safer than most countries around the world. Yes there are a few bag snatches and occasional pickpocketing etc, but MUCH less than elsewhere. I have said many times that the safety issues lie elsewhere, on the roads for pedestrians, electrical safety, blocking emergency exits and so on. |
