Hi,

I've been offered a 9-month internship at a company in Beijing, but they are only offering me an F visa. I am planning on taking my wife with me. A couple of questions:

1. I will get a small income from the internship - is this legal on an F visa, or do I need a Z visa? Should I be concerned?

2. Can my wife be "included" under my F visa? (I know this can be done with a Z visa...)

3. If not, I guess she will have to get a tourist visa (presuming, in the worst case, she can't get a job and her own F or Z visa). If so, what are her chances of being able to stay for 9 months as a tourist, and what's the best way to do it? Go to HK after 6 months to renew?

4. Am I likely to be able to get an F visa to cover the 9 months, or will I have to go to HK to renew as well after 6 months?

I just want to make sure that this is going to be doable, and that we won't have to leave China early because a visa can't be renewed. Thanks for your help :-)

Point 1 This is a much discussed question. I have worked on an F visa but many people say it is not legal. The PSB were fully aware in my case. I would say that if the organisation is offering an F they have a good relationship with the PSB so I would go ahead. The likelihood is that they cannot get you aZ visa if you were to try and insist.

2. I don't think she can be included in yr F visa. Sge can apply for a 3 month multiple entry visa and be sure she can exit and return, or a single 3 month visa and try to renew it in China.

3. If she is interested in teaching she could get a Z visa in her own right, there are plenty of jobs and the hours are low. Ha, then you can be included in her Z visa! Or she might get teaching work for a language centre get an F visa, they might allow her to work less than full time but much of the work is evenings and weeeknds. BUT choose a known one if possible!

4. F visas can be granted for 9 months, mine was only for 6 months (no idea why), but you shouldn't have to leave the mainland to get it... let the company worry about it.

In fact, let the company sort it all out for you!!!

See BBQQ's new thread... there is a different visa for an internship greater than 6 months.

By the way, what is an internship, it is American English (oh, what an oxymoron!) and it seems to me to mean something like work experience. So what does it mean in American, and how do the Chinese authorities define it?

Thanks Apault. My understanding (I'm Australian) is that an internship is the same as work experience, but generally full-time and for a few months (and probably more likely to be paid living expenses).

I saw the X-visa description in that post..."Issued to an applicant who comes to China for the purpose of study, advanced studies or intern practice for a period over six months." I don't remember seeing anywhere on the visa application form, though, where you can even indicate which type of visa you want...

About letting the company sort it all out...I'm sure they will take care of me, but I'm not sure they will exercise the same responsibility for my wife :(

Am I worrying too much?
