Hi, all you guys,

I am so excited. You know why. Because of your hesitation, I solemnly declare that this post will be the " Virgin Post" at this board since the "Fashion Board" was officially launched. Haha. ( When I logged in, I found quite a few TCG memembers were online: Travelermike, West, Lion, Kevin).

Because of your postponements, here comes my post ( Virgin Post in the officially opened fashion board). Hey guys, don't you want to be first? I have always been trying to be first. Hey, don't take it too serious, I am kidding.

Well, forget it. Let's turn to business. Since this 'Fashion Board" is a new-born baby, it needs our joint care with TCG moderators Siva and Christine. Thanks TCG again for opening this board! ( I am partial to Fashion).

As a prelude to this board, I want to discuss the notion of fashion with fad-lovers. Oxford Dictionary defines 'Fashion" as "popular style (of clothes, behavior, etc) at a given time or place. According to this definition, can I say that fashion is "short-lived ", only lasts for a given time or period?
Can I equate fashion with popularity or unique or being yourself ? Wearing jeans is popular in China. So wearing jeans is fashionable. Punk music was once very fashionable.

Is fashion equal to that you can set a trend? Celebrities usually have that power. You don't, me either.

Do any other words mean "fashion/fashionable"? Within my poor limited vvocabulary, I can figure out only these few words: Trendy, Faddish, Trend-setter, fad, fashionable, stylish.vogue, modish, swellish, a la mode, dashy, wow does "flashy" count? How do you native-speakers describe that "sb or sth is fashionable"? I am eager to learn these "fad-related" words. I will appreciate if you can help. Thanks in advance.

Additionally, what is your understanding of fashion?

You mentioned some very good synonyms up there. If someone is fashionable, we also say "cool" ie someone who is cool often has an attractive personality in addition to nice clothing.

"Funky" means fashionable in an unconventional way. ie Mo-town style clothing or music. It tends to be more urban style and sometimes a fusion of styles from different countries. I had a pair of iridescent blue pants -- those would be called funky.

"Chic" is the French word for fashionable. It describes something that looks elegant, often tailored, think Chanel, Posh Spice and they are very chic. It is a little bit snobby though...and uptight.

Flashy is not the same as fashionable. It's a style of people who wear a lot of jewelry (bling), bright colours, and maybe provocative clothing or very high heels. Pretty dramatic stuff...

The word fashionable can mean almost anything that's popular, like white wedding dresses, big corporations, moving to big cities, traveling to Europe, etc...

Wow, fantastic. CHYNAGYRL,

Thanks for your kind help and instruction."Cool, funky, chic". Very idiomatic expression. Funky is a good word. I havn't come across this word before.

"I had a pair of iridescent blue pants -- those would be called funky." Do you like blue? Me, too. I believe the blue pants must well fit you.

The Jeans with one or two holes was once very popular with Chinese punk. Have you ever tried? How about the jeans in your country? (US / Canada, sorry, I am not sure what your nationality is .)

In America, there are different types of jeans. At the bottom level, there's the cheap jeans you get from discount superstores (ie Wal-Mart). say $30 each. Then there's Levi Strauss jeans which are good quality, classic American styles. Around $50. Then there's Clavin Kleins, getting more expensive say $80.

Now, let's go to the expensive stuff that you buy in a luxury department store: Seven jeans around $130 a pair, or celebrity brands like William Rast (by Justin Timberlake) --- around $230 a pair. I don't know why someone would that much for a pair of jeans...

Most people don't like jeans with holes now. They look too sloppy. But we like different cuts, washes, and low-waisted jeans are still in vogue I think. Do you know what whiskers are? They look like whiskers at the crotch. I don't really like that style, but it's popular.

" Most people don't like jeans with holes now. "

May I conclude that Jeans is still so popular in US and Canada? "Low-waisted jeans are still in vogue." In China, the low-waisted jeans is in vogue too. Many Chinese fad girls like it very much. I am not sure what you really refer "Whiskers" to. But I have seen many girls wear low-waisted jeans with a waistband hanging the stuff like several colored threads.

Low waisted jeans? Oh, it's just for slim girls! Plump girls wearing that will be too ugly!
Fad seems far away from fat girls.... : (

Fad means to be yourself. Fad means your have the power to set a trend. Fad is near to everyone who want to be unique. In China, an online-celebrity "Sister Furong" is actually quite fat. Anyway, she has set a trend. Some people believe she is "funky".

Sister Furong? She made me sick. I really can not understand why some people like her and believe she is funky.

Rig Fashion is "short-lived ", only lasts for a given time or period. Today, you buy a fashionable clothe. Tomorrow, it would be outdated. So, pursuing or keeping ht,fashion is costly. But being fashionable brings you much confidence puts you under the spotlight.

OMG, Jimmy, you mentioned "Sister Furong". Is she funky? Terrible.

As for my understanding of fashion, I think fashion means to be yourself, and dress yourself as that you can accept the one in mirror.

Fashion is by no means short-lived. Fashion can be long-lasting, or even become eternal. There are some fad stuff which spread generation after generation. The way some celebrities dressed can influence several generations of followers.
