It was one of my Irish grandmother's favorite sayings, "Youth is wasted on the young." Do the Chinese have a similar saying? ...and what meaning do you draw from the words?

was it a regretful exclamation from Georges Bernard SHAW?

Heavens! FAERIEQUEENE...I did a google search and it was George Bernard Shaw. I always thought it was just an Irish saying. I thought about it today when a friend's son was glued to a computer game when it was a beautiful day on a lake in Montana.

GRIZ, then I have the following counterpart Chinese saying to propose: 勸君惜取少年時 (in simplified chinese => 劝君惜取少年时 ) a saying taken from a verse of the 300 Tang poems, 'The Golden Dress" (金縷衣), 8-9 AD 勸君莫惜金縷衣,勸君惜取少年時,花開堪折直須折,莫待無花空折枝 (English translation: Love not your golden dress, I pray, More than your youthful golden hours! Gather sweet flowers while you may, And not the twig of flowers! )

Many young boys waste their precious Youth on something meaningless, palying computer games, smoking and drinking or fighting with others. Only when they are old, they feel regretful and think that they should do something meaningful when they were young. Youth can not be wasted.

hehehe...you should be careful giving such advice Dodger ... ...a story from my best friend's childhood. When we were kids in the 1950's the TV show Superman was a smash hit. The introduction to the TV show was: "Look... up in the sky..... It's a bird.... It's a plane.... NO! It's Superman!!!!" Every little boy had a Superman outfit and ran around pretending to be Superman. My good friend was certain he could fly like Superman. He put on his Superman outfit with it's bright red cape...climbed on to the roof of his house....and jumped off!!! (He was a lucky little boy and was not badly hurt.) To this day he says, "I really expected to fly!!!" :-)

You are welcome Dodger.... I knew that your meaning was figurative....but all too often figures of speech are taken literally ;-)
