How many bridges are there in the world? Many people may say this is an award question and there are hundreds of thousands of bridges over there world. However, personally, I think there are only two types of bridges in the world: one types is the bridges that we can see and cross every day, such as the stone bridges and overline bridges in our cities-- I call it the tangible bridge; the other is the bridge between human souls( Culturally), which is invisible, and I call it the intangible bridge. Whether they are visible or not, they both perform the function of communication. There seems to be a strange phenomenon that the tangible bridges are becoming stronger and stronger, while the intangible bridges are becoming vulnerable. Ancient bridges were mainly made from stone and wood, which are not solid. However, people usually crossed the bridges to visit their close neighbors. They opened their minds and hearts to each other and lived in harmony. In other words, the tangible bridges between their hearts and souls are sound and firm.

Made from steel and concrete, modern bridges have a good reason to be solid. Unfortunately, we are witnessing that lack of communication and understanding is existing universally and enlarging in our society. The enlarging gap between the rich and the poor, the gap between the old and the young, and even the gap between the most beloved ones, are signaling us that the intangible bridges (the bridges between human souls and the cross-culture bridges) are becoming fragile. In big cities, it is no longer a surprise to see that we don’t know our “close” neighbors’ names in spite of having lived in the same floor of an apartment for several years. The distance between human souls is becoming larger and larger. Ironically, the solidity of the tangible bridges seems to be in inverse proportion to that of the intangible bridges. Steel and concrete seems to indicate that our bridges are becoming solid enough to prevent others from entering our inner hearts.

(Thanks Dodger for his words “We are trading ideas and opinions here”, which inspires me to think we are building a cross-culture bridge, hence this piece of writing. Although we are diverted on certain issues, we are trying hard to solidify and reinforce this cross-culture bridge. )

" Whether they are visible or not, they both perform the function of communication. There seems to be a strange phenomenon that the tangible bridges are becoming stronger and stronger, while the intangible bridges are becoming vulnerable." Can I interprete your idea in this way that the reinforcement of concrete and steel bridges symbolizes the the solidification of material civilization, wheras the increasing vulnerability of intangible bridges signalize the mounting spiritual emptiness.

Sadly or not, human being can never understand other's mind/thought/idea directly.

Human is the most complicated animal with the most intricate feelings. Mutual understanding and trust are vital to a sincere friendship. We need more reinforced "intangible bridges" tp bridge the enlarging gap between our souls.

Well, the intangible bridges and tangible bridges both need to be reinforced. The world, in nature, is composed of tangible materials. No solid bridges made of concrete and stone, it will be hard to establish the intangible bridges of communication between the living creature.

I agree with Leonardo on his reply. Different and ordinary people from all over the World have never talked to each other as they are today via sites like this one. This can only bring more understanding and perhaps bring the intangable a little closer to becoming tangable. Dodger.
