Today, Shinzo Abe, Japanese Prime Minister delcares that he intends to quit at a press conference. At the conference, he hopes that the next prime minister could pursue to continue the war against terror. He also said that he lacked the power to rally people together. Meanwhile, he has difficulty in implementing the policies and gathering public support.

Before, Abe wished to extend the country's refueling mission in support of the U.S.-led operation in Afghanistan. However, the opposition leaders did not agree with him. Perhaps, that is the main reason he decided to resign.

However, he will still act as the prime minister until the new prime minister is elected by the ruling party. It needs at least a month.

Why did he step down? Except what has been mentioned in the news, is there any other reasons? I read that he suffered a defeat in parliamentary election and some damaging scandals. It must have something to do with these.

Yes, it's quite strange that he announced to quit since he promised he wouldn't step down easily in the past.
