![]() | My gal told me this morning that the package I sent her had arrived. It had big pictures from our trip and my used digital camera in it. On the customs form to send the package I said the pictures were worth $10 USD and the camera was worth about $60 USD. She told me that she must pay 280 RMB or $37 USD for the package I sent her. That seems to be a lot of money to pay to get your mail. Does that fee sound normal? Did I do something wrong and she had to pay for it? I wanted to send her something nice for Thanksgiving/Christmas time and am now afraid that a really nice gift will cost her a lot of RMB. Can some one explain how the tax/duty system works, please? I do not want my gal to go in debt to get my packages. :-/ |

![]() | Hi, This is Bill, nice to talk to you. I think you must send the gifts acrose border, if not, I don't think your gal need to pay tax. I have been working in the foreign trade in the past two and half years, so I know something about the customs. As to the duty, it mainly depends on the value you declared and the nature of the goods. Some goods you don't need to pay tax, of course some goods are forbiden to import. Let's chat more next time. Best Regards. Bill |

![]() | I have exported from China for some time and understand that there is an export tax and also an import tax. I do not know the rates however. A Freight Forwarder would be able to explain the rates to you Griz and how to get round them if it is posible. Dodger. |

![]() | Now that you say that, I'd bet it has something to do with the customs form I fill out in the US. When I shipped this package, the computer made me fill out the business customs form. It would not send it on the personal form. |

![]() | Hi, Last year, I sent a present to a Chinese girl that is special to me for her birthday (from Canada to Shenzhen). It was a gold ring that worthed over RMB 2,000. I used just the regular (national post service) express mail, but not any kind of fast and expensive courrier service. At first, I was worried about what the Chinese customs/post service would do with it in the transit and if anyone would just open the gift and keep it for himself. The lady at my local post office suggested me or wrote for me on the parcel "costume accessory / value of 10$ [RMB 70]". The gift got to her in a normal delivery time un-opened and at no charge to her at all... Although, just make sure to include a contact (Chinese) phone number because the address might sometime be hard for them to read and the post service will call the recipient if there is a problem with the delivery (which they did in my case). I hope this helps... Good luck with you shipments. / AL |
