Which comes first: social responsibility or profit?

Jimmy,

I think that if you were to start your own business, and make lots of money, it will be good if you decide to spend your wealth in a socially responsible manner.... maybe you will want to change the world for the better... many rich men succeed in doing so! But I advise you keep your good works separate financially from your business accounts. There is no problem ensuring that you run your business according to a strict moral code, but I advise not getting it involved with charitable works or political causes... remember that one man's view of social responsibility may be another man's view of social meddling!

My time on the pulpit expired :)

Mike, I think that doing business does not suit me because I am not smart enough to deal with many data.

but I advise not getting it involved with charitable works or political causes... remember that one man's view of social responsibility may be another man's view of social meddling!

You are right. But why not do some charitable works? Is it social meddling? I think that it is good. If we are all selfish and only care about ourselves, what will the world look llike?

If we where all selfish and looked after are self’s there would be no need of charity work for anybody.
But the fact is that some cannot look after themselves and need help.
The problem with a social security net is that it attracts the lazy and greedy, not the needy.

"The problem with a social security net is that it attracts the lazy and greedy, not the needy" of course there is some truth in that but it'sthe typical viewpoint of those who oppose safetly nets and social welfare.

We should do well to remember that capitalism attracts cheats..... most businesses/businesmen do everything they can to not pay tax, many outside the law, but overall most just totally lack the concept of social repsnsibility. The cost to the Australian govt of tax fraud is far greater than welfare cheating...(but I guess that's not surprising as the PM has removed much of the social welfare).

Paul,
I understand the need for a safety net and totally agree with having one in place.
But they can and do breed an underclass of people who believe that it is their right to live off of the labour that others produce. Unless you are of the theory that money grows on trees?
“We should do well to remember that capitalism attracts cheats”
Some believe that if you repeat something often enough it becomes true like the statement above.
Small business in Australia employs more people than all of the large corporations.
Many of them run by families who’s take home pay is often less than that of the people that they employ.
You label all of these “capitalists” greed cheats with no social responsibility. It sounds like you have never run a pie stall in your life.
But rest assured, Australia will soon be back under the jackbooted heal of the Union movement. God help her.
Cheers, Dodger.

Any business enterprise needs to maximise the profitability of its operations in order to justify its continued exist.

Travellermike, I agree with you. The major goal of a corporation is to make profits. Most businessmen put "profits" on the top priority. Here, in a word, a businessman is firstly a profit-follower, then secondly or possibly a philanthropist.
