No wonder some Chinese have a strange perception of western culture! Can you explain the 'beard culture' to us? Why do they have long beard?

I think I grew my first beard because I was so fed up with the constant nicks to my face when shaving, I would be covered in blood most days so I thought that's it I will grow a beard, once I grown it I liked the way I looked, I did grow it to about 6 inches once but decided mine looked better short and tidy.
These days I would look a bit silly as I'm now almost bald so I keep myself clean shaven now.
