According to Xinhua news, China high level officals and experts attended a meeting to discuss how to protect the environment around Three Gorges. They warned that China would face a catastrophe if it fails to take measures to solve the environmental problems caused by Three Gorges Dam.

China has spent 15 year to construct the Three Gorges Dam. Each year, the power generation of the dam is as much as 50 million coals that produces. It can also decrease about 0.1 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions. However, it has caused some environmental problems since last year. Landslide, water loss and earth erosion and other natural disasters frequently happen in the Three Gorges area. These are the side-effects of the Three Gorges Dam.

In recent years, China has invested about 12 billion yuan to deal with the natural disasters in this area. About 1500 manufacturing ventures have been shut down or been relocated. What's more, about 70 thousand people have been resettled. Also 70 sewage disposal and waste treatment plants have been set up.

The Three Gorges Dam has brought many economic benefits while it also has imposed negative effect on the ecological environment. China's government should not win the economic boom by sacrificing the environment. Hope more measures can be adopted to prevent the environmental problems.

Maybe it is already too late.

Where did youget the figure of 70,000 peopel being resettled? For some time the government has accepted it as over 1 million, but in the report you referred to I believe they said it has been 1.7 million (1,700,000) people.

The harmonious society which is the stated goal of the government has one pillar which is harmon between people and the environment, or if you like, a balance between the economy and the needs of the environment. I believe this is also a part of the scientific approach to development which the government requires. I hope this project satisfies these worthy goals, but based on international experience, I am not sure it will

Paul, I can not agree with you anymore. The environment pollution is a key issue in China. I watched a TV programme that reported the environment situation in 2006. To be honest, I was really shocked by that programme. Did you know the Songhuajiang Pollution Accident? That was too terrible. Peole are always attach importance to the pollution issue after it brings severe effect. Why do they try to prevent it?

The only thing that makes me happy is that the government has attached importance to the environment and more severe measures have been adopted. Hope that they can take effect.
