Now we all know Russia likes to flex it's muscles when dealing with it's military but do you think that the new Russian Bomber flyovers near Alaska and UK are harmless rhetoric in response to the US's stance on missile defense?

To elaborate slightly on this, I mean: Does the US's hard line approach to the missile shield that it wants to implement into eastern Europe dictate to the Russians that we are OK with beginning a new arm's race with them?

I am in no way trying to start a US vs. Russia thread here, I'm just interested what the media in other countries are saying about this topic. And with so many people from so many countries, and so many different perspectives; I would love to hear what you all think.

It is quite interesting how the Russian bomber flights has caused potentially 'counter-intended' reaction In the UK... The opportunity presented to capture a picture of the new Tornado / Eurofighter flying 'escort' to a an ancient badger bomber was a 'god-send' to the Government / Defence Industry in the UK.... If the general public was growing suspicious that the fortune spent developing this fighter had been wasted.. suddenly the investment appeared vindicated! In fact the picture was re-used time and again even when more ancient UK Tornado's (great 'plane btw) were performing the 'intercept' function.

Having visited both the US and Russia on a number of occasions, I am impressed by the common characteristics between the peoples of these two great nations (including their internal differences and frictions)... perhaps it is something about the geographical reach of both countries?

It is all about Putin,
With presidential elections only six months away, such assertive nationalism convinces
many Russians that he has restored the country’s international prestige.

TRAVELLERMIKE

Could you please further explain "perhaps it is something about the geographical reach of both countries"?

Hi Katrina, I am only guessing really.... but to explain my thinking both the US and Russia stretch so far from east to west that they have a big time difference across their country, also transport infrastructure and low-cost long-distance travel (by railways and then airlines) have been essential priorities for both nations in order maintain internal markets and government communications.

The differences and frictions created by the gap between city-based thinking and rural thinking are amplified by the vast distances between the communities. China is one of the few countries with similar challenges, but it appears to me that China has dealt with issue of geographical reach of its government very differently, maybe this is because it was a problem needing to be solved in China long before the emergence of modern technologies.
