Hey,
Is "gentleman" a dying breed? There are fewer anf fewer gentlemen all over the world. In particular, the renowned powerhouse of gentlemen-UK saw a decline in gentlemanly behavior. Why? Women want to be equal to men. Do you think that there is any conflict between the idea that men should act as gentlemen toward ladies and the idea that men and women should be equal? If so, how should this conflict be resolved? What is the proper balance between the two ideas?

Perhaps I am a little old fashioned? I still give my seat up on a train for a woman. I still walk on the kerb side when I am walking with a woman and I still open a door to allow the woman that I am with to proceed first.
Perhaps all of them are bad habits.
It was what I was taught. To be respectful to those who are physically weaker than me.
Perhaps my time has passed as some women take this as an offence in this age of enlightenment.
We live in changing times.

I know this sounds like " a scratched record " but I'm the same as you Dodger, infact I was recently described as a delightful gentleman by a hospital specialist I had seen while I was suffering with kidney stones.

So we should keep up the standards that have been given to us Alan by our parents.
Money and social standing does not make a gent. As we both know .
Cheers, Dodger.

Gentlemanly conduct is not necessarily connected with women, LEOPOLD219. However, it is fair to say that feminist movement befuddled many gentlemen by branding courtesy as sexism.

As APAULT mentioned in another post...some former feminists are now saying "Why should I give up some of my rights?" :-)

I am still in favor of the Gentlemanly conduct. The typical British gentlemanly behavior should be promoted. I remember the scene that when Titanic hit an iceberg, the gentlemen still demonstrated their gentlemanly conduct. " Let women and kids be aboard first". In face of death, Gentlemen should also be gentlemanly.

Griz326, Originally, gentlemanly conduct is associated with women. Actually, I haven't seen any gentlemanly conducts among men themselves. At best, the courtesy
betweem two men can be called " Politeness ". There is a really a delicate difference between " Gentlemanly conduct" and " Courtesy" .
