Driving foreign car in China

I would like to know if it's possible to drive a foreign car into China. I have plans to explore China by driving all over the country. What are the permits required etc?

Too much money and red tape involved. Better to shelve that plan.

If your vehicle is registered in Macau, you may have some success as residents are able to drive onto the mainland from there. and of course you'll also need a mainland licence to be able to drive any kind of vehicle here.
