Advice for my travels from Beijing to Xian

Hi there
Any advice welcome.
My boyfriend and I will be travelling to China backpacking in June 2008. We intend to travel from Beijing to Xian. Can anyone give me any good tips on a good, safe Backpackers Hostel, reasonable price in Xian, in city centre?
Also what is the best way to travel to see the 'tourist sights'?
Also would anyone recommend the hard sleeper for travelling on the train from Beijing?

Xi'an has several good youth hostels. As Iceberg says look up the website. Prices around 50rmb per person in a dorm.
