So all of you western guys must have heard of Eric Clapton at some point in your life. Beautiful blues rock but most popularly he’s known for the slow dance song that is always played “Wonderful Tonight”. It has been played at every dance social that I have attended from elementary school to high school and in my opinion, one of the best songs ever. I really don’t understand why I did not make it into Rolling Stones “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” compilation but just by leaving it out that the collection loses credibility but I will admit, it’s a tough list to make any changes to.

But I bring this up because here in the west, Wonderful Tonight is a song that you slow dance to with your love or play/sing if you want her to know how you feel. But what about you guys with overseas Chinese counterparts? Well I got you covered. If you want that cliché laden situation where you’re seated and waiting for her to finish getting ready you can throw in Jay Chou’s “Wu Ding”.

OK OK, some who have heard of him will have something negative to say possibly. But that dude has got mad skillz. Classical music infused with every day sounds and lyrics that never stop rhyming is why he is given his own genre of music, “Jay Style” No not gay.

And if you can’t get your hands on the real thing that quick, here is something to tide you over until you got it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYbMwLcsMPY it’s a live version but you can get an idea of the tone.

My favorite version of it is a little more rougher than the real studio duet and the live version above and it’s a little different since it has some added English lyrics in the beginning and with a piano and not sung by Landy Wen but with Hou Pei Cen. LOL ok so it could be called a “different” song but it is really REALLY good. Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcC-tE_nLAM and if you got the sheet music for that duet I would totally love it.

And here is a link for the English and Mandarin/Taiwanese lyrics: http://www.learn-chinese-through-music.com/jay-chou-wu-ding-lyric.html

Take it however you like it but I bet she will be pretty impressed that you know the lyrics to that song just in case you’re dancing to it or . . .singing?

Danny, it seems that you really like Jay Chou. I have been listening to his songs for some period. He is really a genius. Wu Ding (屋顶) is good. But I like Qing Tian (晴天) better.

Eric Clapton is one of my guitar heroes and Wonderful Tonight was always one of my favourites, so maybe I will like Jay Chou too.

Hey what’s up,

Iceberg, I wouldn’t say “really” but he is a talented musician. I still kind of have a tough time coming up with my own translation since I learned to speak English before Cantonese in a Hakka home. Such as that beautiful song “Qing Tian” I still can’t seem to get whether its “Nice day” or “Sunny day” but its all good. If you like

And if you like American music Iceberg, you should check out Appleseed Cast. They may not got sweet lyrics but what they have is poetic and you can barely understand them and in a way like Jay who mumbles a lot. And is that you in the avatar? Because I never talked to a Latin person who listens to Asian music before.

Westnorwoodgas, if you were to choose one song between Wonderful Tonight or Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton to be inducted into Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Songs of All time, which would you choose?

Danny
