So until I get word from my company on a possible transfer to China, I was wondering what does it take to become an English teacher in China? because my major was definitely not Liberal Arts nor was my minor. Thanks Danny

If you're really serious the first thing you should do is check out one of the best resources on the web: http://www.eslcafe.com/ This place will give you a lot of information about jobs, and the forums have loads of useful advice etc. It's still not that difficult to come to China and teach. Preferably you need to have a degree in something and some experience of teaching - these two things will help considerably. But just check out the millions of job posts and you can always make an enquiry at a school/uni to see what they require of you. Good luck.

Generally speaking, you must have a degree and speak English as a first language.... and American is included in that category for some strange reason!!!! Strewth...the implications, Dubba is about to retire from his present job soon.......!! Anyway......most schools and colleges look for a minimum of a 1 term (semester) commitment, and at this time they would want a minimum of end-date 30th June. Your post sounds like you only want to do it short term until your company can post you here. In that case you would be better to consider private language centres. As Lemoncactus says there are several good websites... I would add anesl.com (Angelina's Cafe) which is a large China only site and foreign-teacher.com/english/index.asp (ESL Connexions, who placed me). If you want to teach in my college/uni...msg me directly as we still have vacancies here (near Guangzhou). I

Check out some other threads JIM. In summary, it is hard to get a long visa. Try for a multiple entry visa, longest duration you can get. It is often easier to get a longer visa for business..an F visa. You will need an invitation and probably the easiest way is to use one of the agencies which advertise - lookin the Advertisement Forum. If you marry, you should be able to get an annual L visa. Where you should look depends a lot on your climatic and lifestyle preferences. If you tell us more I am sure u will get more feedback.
