i have been told that under Beijing there is an underground city - is it possible for tourists to visit his wonder ?

Peter, Do you refer the undergound street (B1 Floor of Xindongan Store)under the Wangfujing Street?

that may well be it Gurty . i was told that it was most interesting and expansive - would i be able to see it?

What you're looking for is the Underground tunnels that the Communists built so they could get around the city unnoticed and escape the city if they ever came under serious attach. A portion of it is open as a tour these days.
