Can anyone indentify this couple?

I'm interested in this couple whose photo I found in a small museum near Maerkang in Sichuan, another of those places that Mao Zedong and his Generals spent time on their march to Shanxi. I would appreciate if anyone can help identify them The information given states that is name is Solpurt Bury, Journalist, writer and one time Editor-in-chief of the New York Times. I'm guessing that his name is miss- spelt. I did a google search and came up with nothing. It is also difficult to determine just when or where the photo was taken but he is said to have visited the area around Maerkang and commented on some of the ancient buildings there.
