Nanning, capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in south China, has been granted the Habitat Scroll of Honor Award 2007. It is one of the only two city winners worldwide this year.

The Habitat Scroll of Honor, established in 1989 by the United Nations General Assembly to raise awareness about the state of human settlements, is awarded on World Habitat Day - the first Monday of each October.

Apart from Nanning, seven Chinese cities have won the honor in the past. They are Tangshan (1990), Hangzhou (2001), Baotou (2002), Weihai (2003), Xiamen (2004), Yantai (2005) and Yangzhou (2006).

Have you ever been to Nanning or any one of the above-mentioned seven Chinese cities? What are your impressions of these cities?

Nanning reminded me of cities in parts of Florida in the US. It does not appear to be a tourist destination, just a nice functional city. It was much cleaner than Beijing.

Nanning itself is an industrial town. There is a river walk and you look over rusty factiories. Just to the east is an interesting old village called Yangmei... well worth a visit.

Nanning is fast growing city, as I think many other cities in China, too. I can only compare Nanning to Guangzhou and Guilin. Compared to them Nanning really is a clean city.
I like the climate there, hot and high humidity.
Mt. Qingxiu mountainrange is worth to see, by walk, of course.
Also can find a very old part of Nanning. Heh, can“t recommend to western people who have too sensitive nose.
Oh, and there is a nice Australian bar near by Nanhu lake.
